The Media and Public: A Broken Relationship



It's no surprise to many that the public and media have a frail relationship these days. It would be easy to blame Trumps clever and subtle campaign to delegitimize all media outlets that criticize him and his administration. But we are in an era where over two dozen women can report sexual misconduct of a politician to a major news outlet, and the candidate still has a chance of winning a senate seat. Yes, I'm talking about Roy Moores. We have to ask ourselves what happened between today and when credible newspaper reporting helped bring a Republican president down and influence social change.

In my opinion, it seems the media has severed its relationship with a large portion of the nation, specifically conservatives. It comes from major media networks inability to stay objective in their reporting and its been a long time since they have. Conservatives outside of FOX are constantly seeing the favorable reporting of democratic presidents such as Bill Clinton and Barak Obama and disfavorable ones of Reagan, Bush Sr., and Bush Jr. Now, this isn't to say FOX news is objective in reporting on liberals and Democrats because we know they most certainly are not.

In addition to all this all presidents stretch the truth, Trump stretches it to near breaking point, but nonetheless, they all tell lies. CNN's Jake Tapper recently said, "President Obama said things that weren't true and got away with it more for a variety of reasons, and one is the media was much more supportive of him." The intentions and long-term motives of presidents like Obama were also never really doubted by the majority of the big news networks other than FOX, which is another major reason why the public and media have fallen out.

Donald Trump presidental campaign was mainly portrayed as the candidate most unlikely to win, especially with  Hillary Clinton on the ballot. CNN and MSNBC had viewers believing the "grab them by the pussy" guy could never win. Which, in hindsight, further reveals how out of touch these networks were with conservative audiences. Leaving liberals in shocked and conservatives in celebration on election night.

It would be easy to blame the weird sordid relationship between media and the public on Donald Trump. But it's simply not the case. Trump was the icing and cherry on the cake.

Let's Talk About Birth Control

The Facts The Department Health and Human Services issued new rules allowing businesses and non-profit organizations the ability to deny employees contraceptive coverage in their health insurances based on religious or moral objections. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the administration in San Francisco federal court to stop the ruling declaring it was a constitutional violation to keep state and church separate. States such as California and Massachusetts also took legal action and more than a dozen state attorney general's threatened legal action.  This is a monumental win for conservatives as new healthcare policies under Trumps administration have proven to be failures. Facebook and Russia

Social media is a huge part personal lives, business, and politics. In recent events, Facebook has faced scrutiny after it was discovered that 3,000 ads were placed on Facebook by Russians agencies to influence the 2016 presidential election in the U.S. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, and CEO, denied allegations that Facebook played a role in influencing voters. He supported his denial, by saying people base their votes based on lived experiences and not what they see on the social networking platform. He went on to make claims that his company found no evidence in the Russian produced fake news.
