Facebook and Russia

Image
Social media is a huge part personal lives, business, and politics. In recent events, Facebook has faced scrutiny after it was discovered that 3,000 ads were placed on Facebook by Russians agencies to influence the 2016 presidential election in the U.S. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, and CEO, denied allegations that Facebook played a role in influencing voters. He supported his denial, by saying people base their votes based on lived experiences and not what they see on the social networking platform. He went on to make claims that his company found no evidence in the Russian produced fake news. However last week Zuckerberg said he would turn in all ad content that had been produced by Russia to Congress for revision. According to NPR "Members of a hacking group connected to Russia's military intelligence unit, the GRU, began creating fake Facebook accounts as early as June 2016 to amplify stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee, the Post reported. NFL Controversy  Sports in many ways has brought Americans together but also been a platform for a political demonstration, for example, Olympian's Tommie Smith and John Carlos black power salute during the 1968 Olympics. Sports have always been more or less politicized in one way or another. This past weekend, September 23rd, sports was again politicized. Many NFL players took a knee or linked arms during the national anthem, which caused President Donald Trump to tweet and a comment quite a bit.  Tweets by President Trump in Regards to the NFL and Athletes Read: " Tremendous backlash against the NFL and its players for disrespect of our Country. #StandForOurAnthem " " If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect...." "i f NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fir...

He graduated from Yale University and wrote many of Obama's speeches from 2011-2016. "Thanks Obama: My Hopey Changey White House Years"  David Litt's latest comedic memoir details his time writing many of Obama's speeches, jokes, video's and more. He gives insight into his job as the senior presidential writer as well as how the former president added or tweaked the speeches himself. He also delves into the importance of speech writing in politics and how it's a double duties task of getting out the information you want while being extremely conscious of word choice so the opposing party can't misconstrue the speech, create something out of nothing or give a different meaning to what the speech truly intends. for instance, one year in a Thanksgiving video, Obama did not say thanks to ...

Police and Media

Image
On September 16th, 2017,  a Georgia Tech student, Scout Schultz, was gunned down by Georgia Tech Police for advancing towards cops with a multipurpose pocketknife. However, a video released shows Schultz was in no way a threat to anyone but himself by yelling "shoot me" to the cops involved. Schultz did not charge at police, he did not open his pocket knife. He was just a student with mental issues, he was not in the right frame of mind but he was also not a danger to anyone, including the cops. So why was Schultz shot to death, by "trained" police officers?  In the last eight years police brutality, public mistrust of law enforcement, and police conduct/misconduct have been trending topics in media. We've been on a rollercoaster of emotion's through the outrage of Travon Martin, Furgason riots, and Black Lives Matter dominating media outlets. Since media had been an intricate part of the severed relationship between the public and police, it makes me w...
